Very fine and fresh and sleek. Dry and super appetising. A very fair price. Much more interesting than most Marlborough examples.
LIFE ON IONA
Iona Sauvignon Blanc, Elgin, South Africa 2013. South African sauvignon blanc just gets better and better, and Andrew Gunn's pin-sharp Iona exemplifies the country's stylistic stance between bold Kiwi and refined Loire in his cool-climate vineyards in Elgin, with the elderflower and grassiness presented with real verve and nerve.
HAMISH ANDERSON'S PICK OF ELGIN WHITES
2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Iona £12.99 (sawinesonline.co.uk)
I sipped this at the end of a long three-hour tasting; it revitalised me and sent me bouncing to work. It is so vibrant and intense without being over-the-top. There is fruit in the form of lemon and kiwi, but it is its savoury nuances and icy-cool, long finish that make this one of the finest versions of this grape I have had from South Africa.
