Jamie Goode, British journalist and popular blogger (www.wineanorak.com) joined wine cellars in the Elgin valley to get hands-on experience in this Southern Hemisphere harvest. Jamie joined Iona, Paul Cluver, Almenkerk and Elgin Ridge for four days spending time in the vineyards and cellars as grapes were picked, crushed and processed.Read More
LIFE ON IONA
by Christian Eedes 16 JANUARY 2017
Including 4% Semillon, this wine from Elgin producer Iona is extraordinarily expressive right now with notes of granadilla and pineapple to the fore on the nose but also lime and a little jasmine. The palate is fairly bursting with fruit offset by racy acidity, the finish long and dry. Just about critic proof.
Wine Cellar price: R145 a bottle.
2013 Iona, Chardonnay, Elgin, South Africa (£15.00, Marks & Spencer). This is a tour de force from one of the most inventive and impressive wineries in the Cape. With eleven months spent in large oak casks the nuttiness and decadence in this sublime Chardonnay make it the perfect partner for the Turkey crown with sourdough crumbs and orange zest.
Very fine and fresh and sleek. Dry and super appetising. A very fair price. Much more interesting than most Marlborough examples.
Iona Chardonnay 2013 Elgin. Elgin has a talent for Chardonnay. I tried this wine, which in the UK is stocked by Marks & Spencer, and was blown away by it. I gave it a good write up, and then a week later found out it had been awarded five stars by Platter. So I wasn't alone in my admiration. Iona has stepped up a gear in the 2013 vintage, for sure.
Iona Sauvignon Blanc, Elgin, South Africa 2013. South African sauvignon blanc just gets better and better, and Andrew Gunn's pin-sharp Iona exemplifies the country's stylistic stance between bold Kiwi and refined Loire in his cool-climate vineyards in Elgin, with the elderflower and grassiness presented with real verve and nerve.
13% alcohol. A lovely Elgin Chardonnay that blends freshness with a bit of richness. Just beautifully balanced. Grapefruit, pear, white peach and subtle bready notes combine to create an expressive Chardonnay with real citrus precision. Real class. | JAMIE GOODE | 94/100
