OUR WINES

Tim Atkin, MW [ 94/100 ] Jancis Robinson, MW [ 17/20 ] "One of the best examples I tasted this year from South Africa. Stephen Tanzer” “Cool customer with lovely smooth texture. Very definitely more in the mineral spectrum than the green fruit spectrum. Great palate impact. Bone dry finish.  Well done!” 17/20 Jancis Robinson MW “Nettley and rather French, this is a Sauvignon with refinement and a rather cool charm.” “One of my favourite Cape sauvignons, with so much classic, elegant, lively, floral, nettle and white currant fruit that it will shock even the French. “ Jane MacQuitty, The Times “This Sauvignon improves every year and every year it is in my line up of greats. The integrity of the fruit and devastating minerality are both breathtaking.” Top 50 South African Wines Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail "A really fine, elegant South African Sauvignon. It has a very pure, minerally nose with delicate, subtly herbal, gently grassy fruit. The palate is really pure and minerally with some savoury, cut pepper notes, but also a bit of lemony fruit. It’s quite subtle but full flavoured, and would be great with a wide range of different foods, especially a really fresh, simply prepared grilled sea bass. This is one of the best South African Sauvignons I’ve yet tried." "Iona One Man Band received a 93/100 in Tim Atkin's recent report on South African wines." “Almost inky in colour, it is bridled with a pure, well-delineated floral bouquet with violet-tinged black cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is nicely balanced with succulent rounded tannins counterpoised by a fine thread of acidity. ” Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate “Dark, bright colour; very attractive nose of peppery dark fruit, floral notes, smoke and meat. Beautiful structure on the palate with peppery dark fruit, full and luscious, yet with plenty of freshness and tannic backbone, long lingering and complex aftertaste – very appealing material. Very Rhône like. ” Andreas Larsson. “Dark, purple red with violet hue and almost black centre. Elegant flavour, stylistically reminiscent of an Hermitage. Aromas reminiscent of white pepper, dark berries and black cherries. Vanilla and slightly roasted aromas in the background. On the palate well balanced with peppery spiciness, good fruit, well balanced tannins and great length. ” Markus Del Monego “Iona Estate in Elgin has built a formidable reputation for its cool climate white wines. But here winemaker Andrew Gunn has sprung a bit of surprise with a full-on, powerful red. The wine pours a really intense, glass-staining purple colour and has a soaring nose, very expressive of kirsch and violet, with peppery and clove notes too. On the palate this is beautifully pure and supple, the 14% alcohol sitting comfortably within dense, fleshy fruit, very ripe and polished tannins and a framework of both chocolaty richness and pert acidity. It's a smooth devil of a wine this, but a very nice one for beef or game. ” Tom OM Cannavan's, Wine-Pages.com PLATTER 2013 5 STAR nomination “Seamless eclectic blend comprises shiraz, merlot, cab franc, petit verdot and mourvedre. Big, spicy tannins and fragrant sweet dark fruit in polished, booming balancing act. ” “Really dark appearance. Spices, fruitcake, dark chocolate and meat. Multi-layered and not at all tiring to taste. Rounded and smooth. ” Richard Hemming on www.jancisrobinson.com [ 17/20 ] “Made from 'five varieties from Iona's hand nurtured vineyards'. Very dark crimson. Sweet, ripe, nothing like the notorious burnt rubber notes of some traditional Cape reds. Satisfying balance. Tastes as though there is quite a bit of Syrah here. Appetising and good oak handling. ” Jancis Robinson, MW [ 17/20 ]
